Israelis have gathered around the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations advanced in Egypt over an end to the war in Gaza.

The incident resulted in in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most fatal day for Jewish people since the Second World War.

Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"Our bloodthirsty adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the leader added on Tuesday.

He also vowed to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will never again present a danger to Israel".

Memorial Gatherings Across Israel

The government authorities rescheduled state remembrance events until mid-October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but events still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the relatives of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was televised throughout Israeli television channels.

A period earlier, a silent tribute was respected across the country.

Ceasefire Talks in Egypt

Simultaneously, both sides' representatives convened in the North African coastal city of the Egyptian city for a second day of mediated discussions to examine the conditions of the proposal.

A senior delegate involved in the talks indicated that an late session of indirect talks started at evening in Egypt.

The representative said the earlier meeting finished without significant progress, because of differences over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not recommence combat after the opening period of the deal.

He noted that the negotiations are "difficult and have not yet produce any significant progress," but noted that facilitators are making efforts to narrow the gaps between the two sides.

Essential Points in Negotiations

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The trade of the hostages still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance deliveries
  • Future governance of the region

Citizen Sentiment

In the city's Hostages Square earlier, young a woman - whose sibling lived through the attack on the outdoor event, where hundreds were killed and numerous more were captured by Hamas fighters - told: "No place seems like home anymore and until all the hostages are released no one will feel safe."

"When we see everybody home once more, we can breathe anew. Then we can begin to rebuild," she concluded.

In front of the prime minister's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to demonstrate their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel states forty-eight continue in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be living.

Demonstrator Atalia Regev explained: "We must do whatever arrangement required for the hostages to return. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be protected."

Opinion polls now consistently show that around seventy percent of Israeli citizens want the hostilities to finish in exchange for the release of the hostages.

Gaza Conditions

At the area of Nova festival, those paying respects gathered to remember the victims.

From that location, the noise of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the severe Israeli shelling continued.

In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were reported in the early hours of that day in the western neighborhood, sector and locality areas and in the east side neighbourhood of that sector, as well the settlement to the northwest.

"As the evening arrives, the dread arrives with it," evacuated urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike earlier, described.

"My family are terrified of the bombings. During nighttime we are sleeping together, holding each other, especially my smallest child who rests his head on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we check the news to see developments. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be completed and that the conflict will resume to us."

Humanitarian Crisis

The healthcare center in Gaza City announced it had accepted the corpses of six people by the afternoon, including three killed in an Israeli attack in the south part area.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of that area indicated additional fatalities had been brought there. A person was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get help to the southern area, medics stated.
