The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song

This latest animated series, the most recent animated series from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new opening credits. It features our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

Overall, the intro appears amazing. However, I felt that an element was lost in the song choice.

The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member the performer wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few changes and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be one of them.

This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
