The network's Leading New Show of 2025 Secures a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by dark humor, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about following this charming family go about their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to evolve comedy past its current cynical streak. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well help usher in that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
