That Gruesome Animated Movie Conclusion That Stays With Viewers
Out of all the mature animated films I have personally viewed, no other has lingered in my mind quite like the terror-laced conclusion of a viscerally violent as well as deeply subversive film from 2022 Unicorn Wars.
In the year 2015, this Spanish filmmaker created a dark, melancholy and often savage world with some tiny , desolate glimmers of optimism.
Although Unicorn Wars feels like it came from an impulse to push animation further, the director explained that it was actually an effort to express a universal, cross-cultural message concerning “the common origin of every conflict.”
That message is expressed by means of a squad of vividly colored bears , openly modeled after a famous line of cuddly characters.
Growing up in a community built around militarism as well as the defense industry, a lot of these creatures are consumed by exterminating unicorns, due to a religious scripture that tells them they were once rulers of the forest, before these creatures expelled them.
Others did not entirely accepted the propaganda, and would rather sample drugs and mate outdoors.
Unlike their friendly equivalents, these bright beings have visible genitals and obvious libidos.
For one notably brutal, pessimistic creature, Bluey, the battle against unicorns becomes a route to power — and especially to authority over his more tender, kinder brother Tubby.
Bluey behaves aggressively and an apparent psychopath , and when horror takes over his squad and takes his fellow soldiers one by one, he seizes increasingly influence for himself, through ever more violent, harmful methods.
At the same time, these mythical beings are experiencing their own horror, in the form of an expanding, deadly beast in their forest.
“Initially, it seems like a humorous movie,” the director stated. “However it becomes a more serious and sorrowful film. And in the finale, it transforms into a terrifying movie.”
The Unicorn Wars starts out feeling a bit like one of the more playful films by a renowned animator, which find a wicked pleasure in allowing cartoon characters swear, fire weapons, or engage sexually.
Subsequently it turns into closer to a darker film by that same director, featuring progressively visual gore , a palpable link to the actual suffering of battle.
In the finale, it is a complete Grand Guignol bloodbath.
The fear that makes this a perfect Halloween viewing begins a lot earlier than one might expect.
Unicorn Wars is one for the hardcore lovers of violence, for lovers of intense movies who wish to see a film they’ve never viewed until now, and who can handle a narrative that offers no restraint.
View it in a dimly lit space with no disturbances, and the conclusion will burrow under your skin and stay with you.
