New Year's Partygoers Advised to Dress Warmly with Wintry Weather Predicted Across the UK
Forecasters have indicated a chilly start to the new year, with snow expected over large parts of the UK. Celebrants are being urged to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Festive Events Continue Amid Forecasts
Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are planned to take place, following last year's cancellation. This comes despite weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be essential," noted the Met Office.
Celebrations Under Clear but Frosty Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and good visibility. Readings are due to be chilly, making additional clothing a necessity, according to forecasters.
Further north, skies will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Broad Snow Warnings for Friday
Heading into Friday, weather warnings are active for Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

- Disruptions and cancellations are expected on public transport.
The Mercury Set to Fall Even More
With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.
Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Health Advisories Activated
At the same time, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
