On the eve of his sixth anniversary at the helm, Mikel Arteta has admitted that his longevity in North London is directly connected to achieving success.

Reflecting on: The Arteta Era

Arteta was appointed on December 20th, 2019 and managed to steer the team to an FA Cup triumph a short time later. But, that early success stands as his sole top-tier trophy after taking over from Unai Emery.

“Absolutely,” Arteta responded in response to a query about his future past 2027. “However, it is about today. And many things have to happen in the coming months as well to earn the right.”

This weekend sees the anniversary with a fixture against Everton, the identical team Arsenal played the day after his hiring was confirmed.

The Current Landscape

Given that chasing Manchester City playing against West Ham on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal risk losing the summit in the Premier League prior to their fixture. This situation arises notwithstanding Arteta presiding over a squad that has endured in excess of one hundred injury setbacks from the beginning of last season.

He is under a contract with 18 months remaining on the extension he agreed to in 2024, yet understands fully that he must deliver sooner rather than later.

Over this half-decade, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, desire to learn and give their all to the team.”

Even with the injury crisis and the immense scrutiny, Arteta is confident the club's “priorities and messaging” are vastly different from when he first arrived.

Arteta highlighted the squad's displays as evidence of progress. “You look at the performances, all the historical marks we surpassed... We still haven't been able to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the caliber we've reached.”

He finished by saying, “It represents a quality that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And our aim is to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
