Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals using such drugs must be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," said one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
