Australian Teen Faces Charges for Allegedly Attaching Googly Eyes on ‘Blue Blob’ Sculpture
A young person from the Land Down Under has faced legal proceedings after allegedly defacing a large art piece of a legendary being by affixing plastic eyes to it.
The 19-year-old, 19 years old, appeared via phone at the local court in the state of South Australia on Tuesday, charged with one count of property damage.
Officials commented at the moment of the recent event, the local council explained that surveillance video showed a individual putting artificial eyes on the artwork, which residents have dubbed the “Cast in Blue”.
The accused made no plea and informed the court she was unwell, as reported by media sources, with the judge recommending her to secure a legal representative before her upcoming hearing in December.
A day after the reported event, the city leader said that repairs to the popular community sculpture would be costly as the stickers could not be detached without damaging the sculpture.
“This wilful damage to a cherished community art is inappropriate and disrespectful,” Mayor Lynette Martin remarked in mid-September. “It is not innocent amusement, it is costly - it is also frustrating to those people of our community who have embraced Cast in Blue.”
The mayor said the local government would seek the “significant” restoration expenses from those accountable for the damage.
When the sculpture was initially suggested, it drew mixed reactions from the area residents due to its price tag and appearance.
Costing 136,000 Australian dollars (eighty-nine thousand US dollars; sixty-eight thousand pounds), the artwork depicts a mythical megafauna, with the creators influenced by an ancient marsupial ant-eater found in nearby caverns that was “huge, slow-moving, and intriguing”.
